As time went on, Mao’s interest in film grew deeper and deeper by her brother. In high school, Mao was fortunate to be invited to the Beijing Film Production Company in China, where she learned more about film. From then on, she had a clear understanding of filmmaking, which made her determined to become an outstanding filmmaker in the future. Mao used her knowledge of Chinese film theories into the practice of American filmmaking. When Mao was in Santa Monica College, she successfully directed three short films, and also participated in numerous filmmaking productions. Subsequently, she participated in international film festival screenings. Mao respectively took on the roles of director, producer, editor, etc. After she accumulated a great amount of social practices, she was able to criticize movies based on her own judgments, and in the process of making a movie, she gradually found her own unique style. When Mao was in CSUN, she realized her desire to become a professional director, in order to make a successful film, she must at the same time understand all the little details and intricacies of filmmaking. For that reason, she decided to get better at skills she wasn’t very familiar with, such as sound direction and cinematography. When learning about editing and sound directions in CSUN, Mao learned that sound played a crucial part in filmmaking, you can say that a film without sound is like a human being without a soul. Sound in a film expresses the emotions and feelings of the film, which helps connect to the emotions and feelings of the audience. Editing is also important in film production, Mao said: “director is like parents of a film, editor is like a mentor of the parents.” Mao not only has mastered how to record high quality productions of sound, but also mastered how to use Pro Tools and Media Composer for post-production sound and post editing. Mao keeps improving her skills in the film and TV industry because she wants to be a professional director and producer in her future career.
